After a one month delay due to issues related to integrated graphics and wireless licensing, it seems that Intel’s Centrino 2 laptop platform will finally launch on July 14. Centrino will offer the latest Core 2 Duo notebook processors, enhanced graphics and wireless technology. A number of PC vendors, including Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, Toshiba and Fujitsu, are gearing up with a series of new notebooks to coincide with the release of Centrino 2, formerly code-named Montevina.

Dell Inc. has updated its Dell XT Tablet Notebook with an “easy-to-install” multi-touch feature. Laptop magazines had a chance to put their fingers on the touchscreen and published a video of the new capabilities. The software module for the XT adds several two-finger operated features to the XT touch screen, including scrolling, zooming, and programmable double tap to accomplish tasks such as launching a Web browser or turning the screen off to save power. Along with introducing the new functionality for its tablet, Dell expanded its solid-state drive offerings with the addition of a 128-GB drive.
Eagle Business Strategies has announced that its client Computer Intelligence Inc. has launched its Intelligels(R) line of wrist rests for laptop computers. These patent-pending wrist rests were designed to differentiate themselves from the dozens of different wrist rests sold for desktop computers and the few sold for laptops. The goal of this unique design is to provide comfort and relieve the pain and discomfort to the palms and wrists while typing on a hot and hard laptop case. Intelligels offers two versions of the wrist rest, SoftGEL and Lycra nylon SoftFOAM, both of which are simple in appearance and design.
Intel Corporation has signed its biggest low-cost laptop deal with the Portuguese government to provide elementary school students with 500,000 computers. The designs of these computers will be based on the company’s Classmate PC design. The deal strengthens Intel’s competition with the One Laptop Per Child nonprofit organization in the race to market low-cost laptops for schoolchildren, mostly in the developing countries. Intel’s Classmate PC and OLPC’s XO are among a growing field of small, cheap computers aimed at ensuring that students have access to technology and the Internet.
