VIA Technologies, a leading maker of ultra low-voltage x86 microprocessors, has launched the OpenBook mini-note reference design for ultra-portable, low-power notebooks. VIA OpenBook adds new features, such as broadband wireless support and the richer multimedia capabilities, to its predecessor, the NanoBook reference design released last year.


The One Laptop Per Child initiative - the program to build laptops that cost $100 for children in developing countries - has had its share of fits and starts. OLPC has also sparked a number of spin-off companies, including Sugar Laboratories, a nonprofit that was started by Walter Bender.
